Significant support for schools – Lithuanian Americans’ tribute to their homeland

The support of the Lithuanian American “Saulutė” Foundation is a significant contribution to our future generations. For many years, funds coming to our country from across the Atlantic have allowed educational institutions to be supplemented with teaching aids, various engineering classes, laboratories, and classrooms for children with special needs are being created, where the most modern educational aids can be found. By sharing the rays of kindness with our compatriots, Lithuanian Americans also set an example for young people – to take care of their country even when they do not live there.

The goal is to help educators

The initiative to help Lithuanian children originated in 1993 in a suburb of Chicago (USA). At that time, according to Daina Siliūnienė, the chairwoman of the Lithuanian American Foundation “Saulutė”, there were a number of orphanages and homeless children living in our country. As the foundation expanded, its members decided to extend a helping hand to children in schools by implementing various projects. Integrating students with special needs into the country’s educational institutions was a real challenge, so the foundation paid great attention to children in the districts. Thanks to the foundation members, the first engineering classes, chemistry, robotics or physics laboratories appeared in the country’s schools.

Lithuanian-Americans provide various types of support to our schools: classrooms are equipped, and equipment is purchased for children with special needs. Over the past few years, about 20 Lithuanian schools have been supported.

As Artūras Žilys, a member of the board of the foundation, said, it has been noticed that there is no shortage of specialists in the country working with children with special needs, but there is a lack of educational tools for this. “Our goal is to help educators work with children. Over the past 4–5 years, we have helped 15 schools purchase tools and equip special classes, and we have helped equip engineering and technology classes in three schools in the country. These are two areas in which we specialize, and over the past few years, we have allocated about 350 thousand euros for this purpose, and over the entire life of the fund, approximately 30 years, more than 4 million dollars have been transferred to Lithuania," said A. Žilys.

Not only does it help, but it also sets a beautiful example

Linda Burba, a member of the Foundation's board, calls her trip to Lithuania a great gift. She also calls her mission to help the little ones, who are our future, a great gift.

Paulė Kuzmickienė, a member of the Seimas who accompanied the guests to Utena and is from the region, is not hiding her gratitude to the Lithuanians in America, and was pleased with the strong connection. “The support is very important for the country. The means that schools are enjoying are very much needed. After all, even today, when you visit educational institutions, you probably noticed that they are full of hearts that care about every child and their future. However, not all schools have the funds to purchase means,” noted the Seimas member, who added that children also really need a good example of how to to be able to take care not only of oneself, but also of others. Another member of the Seimas who visited Utena, Dalia Asanavičiūtė-Gružauskienė, agreed with her colleague, saying that it is best to express one's love for one's homeland through good deeds. L. Burba and D. Siliūnienė, who live in America and speak Lithuanian fluently, noticed that parents and grandparents who emigrated from Lithuania during the war and post-war periods left with deep love for their homeland, and they passed that beautiful feeling on to their children. "Maybe that is why we have Lithuanian schools, national dances, various organizations and programs dedicated to preserving Lithuanian identity," said the guests.

Some have already received help, others are still waiting for support

Last Friday, a delegation of guests who visited Utena visited the Utena District Municipality Administration, and then – Dauniškis Gymnasium and Vyturių Progymnasium, and also visited two preschool educational institutions.

With the funds raised by Lithuanian-Americans, Dauniškis Gymnasium supplemented its physics classrooms with much-needed teaching aids. “This is a real miracle,” said physics teacher Loreta Tarvydienė, who demonstrated the aids to the guests, adding that dry theory alone is not enough for students.

Members of the Vyturių Progymnasium community were grateful for the modern furniture and necessary aids. More than 500 students (over 100 of whom have special needs, and 34 have severe special needs) are educated at the educational institution, according to educators, today the work without educational tools is simply unimaginable.\

The guests also visited the kindergartens "Varpelis" and "Gandrelis": who with all the necessary equipment and tools. “This room would need soft covering, curtains, even soft floors, because we have children who fall on the ground. It needs to be safe for them,” emphasized Diana Kraujalienė, director of “Gandrelis”. Summing up her stay in Utena, L. Burba told “Utenos diena” that the visit to our city’s educational institutions had gone smoothly and interestingly, and that the guests were most impressed by the shining eyes of the children and the motivating educators and specialists working with them, who are trying to help everyone. “All this makes us want to lend a helping hand even more,” smiled the guest from the USA.

Reikšminga parama mokykloms – Amerikos lietuvių duoklė savajam kraštui

Amerikos lietuvių „Saulutės“ fondo parama – svarus indėlis į mūsų ateities kartas. Ne vienus metus iš už Atlanto į mūsų šalį atkeliaujančios lėšos leidžia papildyti ugdymo įstaigas mokymo priemonėmis, kuriamos įvairios inžinerinės klasės, laborato- rijos, kabinetai vaikams su specialiaisiais poreikiais, kuriuose galima rasti pačių moderniausių ugdymo priemonių. Gerumo spinduliais besidalydami su mūsų tautiečiais Amerikos lietuviai taip pat rodo ir pavyzdį jaunimui – rūpintis savo kraštu net ir tuomet, kai jame negyveni.

Tikslas – padėti pedagogams

Iniciatyva padėti Lietuvos vaikams atsirado 1993 metais Čikagos priemiestyje (JAV). Anuomet, pasak Amerikos lietuvių „Saulutės“ fondo pirmininkės Dainos Siliūnienės, mūsų šalyje buvo nemažai vaikų namų ir juose gyvenančių beglobių vaikų. Plečiantis fondui jo nariai nusprendė vaikams ištiesti pagalbos ranką mokyklose vykdydami įvairius projektus. Integruoti mokinius su spec. poreikiais šalies ugdymo įstaigoms buvo išties nemenkas iššūkis, tad fondas didelį dėmesį skyrė rajonų vaikams. Fondo narių dėka šalies mokyklose atsirado ir pirmosios inžinerinės klasės, chemijos, robotikos ar fizikos laboratorijos.

Amerikos lietuvių skiriama parama mūsų mokykloms būna įvairi: įrengiami kabinetai, perkamos priemonės vaikams su spec. poreikiais. Per kelerius pastaruosius metus paremta apie 20 Lietuvos mokylių.

Kaip sakė fondo valdybos narys Artūras Žilys, pastebėta, jog šalyje netrūksta specialis- tų, dirbančių su spec. poreikių turinčiais vaikais, tačiau tam stinga mokomųjų priemonių. „Mūsų tikslas – pedagogams padėti dirbti su vaikais. Per 4–5 metus 15-ai mokyklų mes padėjome nupirkti priemonių ir įrengti spec. klases, o trijose šalies mokyklose padėjome įrengti inžinerines bei technologijų klases. Tai dvi kryptys, kur mes specializuojamės, ir per kelerius metus šiam tikslui skyrėme apie 350 tūkst. eurų, o per visą fondo gyvavimo laiką, maždaug 30 metų, į Lietuvą persiųsta daugiau kaip 4 mln. dolerių“, pasakojo A. Žilys.

Ne tik padeda, bet ir rodo gražų pavyzdį

Fondo valdybos narė Linda Burba savo kelionę į Lietuvą vadina didele dovana. Tokia pat dovana ji įvardija ir savo misi- ją padėti mažiesiems, kurie yra mūsų ateitis.

Dėkingumo Amerikos lietuviams neslepianti viešnias į Uteną atlydėjusi iš čia kilusi Seimo narė Paulė Kuzmickienė džiaugėsi tvirtu ryšiu. „Parama yra labai reikšminga šaliai. Tos priemonės, kuriomis džiaugiasi mokyklos, labai reikalingos. Juk ir šiandien lankydamiesi ugdymo įstaigose tikriausiai pastebėjote, kad jose pilna širdžių, kurios rūpinasi kiekvienu vaiku, jo ateitimi. Tačiau ne visos mokyklos turi lėšų priemonėms įsigyti“, pastebėjo Seimo narė, kuri pridūrė, kad taip pat vaikams labai reikalingas gražus pavyzdys, kaip reikia mokėti rūpintis ne tik savimi, bet ir kitais. Savo kolegei pritarė ir kita Utenoje viešėjusi Seimo narė Dalia Asanavičiūtė-Gružauskienė, kuri teigė, kad geriausia savo meilę tėvynei įprasminti gerais darbais. Amerikoje gyvenančios ir puikiai lietuviškai kalbančios L. Burba ir D. Siliūnienė pastebėjo, kad karo, pokario laikais iš Lietuvos emigravę tėvai, seneliai išvyko giliai širdyje mylėdami savo gimtinę, tą gražų jausmą jie perdavė ir savo atžaloms. „Galbūt todėl mes turime lituanistines mokyklas, tautinius šokius, įvairias organizacijas ir programas, skirtas lietuvybei išsaugoti“, sakė viešnios.

Vieniems jau padėjo, kiti dar laukia paramos

Praėjusį penktadienį Utenoje viešėjusi svečių delegacija lankėsi Utenos rajono savivaldybės administracijoje, o paskui – Dauniškio gimnazijoje bei Vyturių progimnazijoje, taip pat užsuko ir į dvi ikimokyklinio ugdymo įstaigas.

Už Amerikos lietuvių surinktas lėšas Dauniškio gimnazija papildė savo fizikos kabinetus itin reikalingomis mokymo priemonėmis. „Tai tikras stebuklas“, – džiaugėsi svečiams priemones pademontravusi fizikos mokytoja Loreta Tarvydienė ir pridūrė, kad mokiniams neužtenka vien sausos teorijos.

Už modernius baldus ir reikalingas priemones dėkingi buvo Vyturių progimnazijos bendruomenės nariai. Daugiau kaip 500 mokinių (iš jų per 100 turi spec. poreikių, o didelių spec. poreikių – 34) ugdančioje mokymo įstaigoje, anot pedagogų, šiandien be lavinančių priemonių darbas tiesiog neįsivaizduojamas. Svečiai taip pat lankėsi ir vaikų lopšeliuose-darželiuose „Varpelis“ bei „Gandrelis“: kams su visa reikalinga įranga ir priemonėmis. „Šiam kambarėliui įrengti reikėtų minkštos dangos, užuolaidų, net minkštų grindų, nes turime vaikų, kurie krinta ant žemės. Reikia, kad jiems būtų saugu“, – pabrėžė „Gandrelio“ direktorė Diana Kraujalienė. Reziumuodama viešnagę Utenoje, L. Burba „Utenos dienai“ pasidžiaugė, kad vizitas mūsų miesto ugdymo įstaigose praėjo sklandžiai, įdomiai, o labiausiai svečius uždegė žibančios vaikų akelės bei su jais dirbantys motyvuojantys pedagogai, specialistai, kurie stengiasi padėti kiekvienam. „Visa tai dar labiau su- teikia noro ištiesti pagalbos ranką“, – šypsojosi viešnia iš JAV.
