Interview with Saulute volunteer Raminta Jacobs

Sacrifice and good deeds bring joy and fulfillment to our lives and give meaning to everyday life. Raminta Vaitėnaitė Jacobs, generously contributed to the project of the charity organization “Sunlight Children’s Aid”, by equipping a classroom for children with special needs, and honored the memory of her parents who valued education throughout their lives.

Raminta, how did the idea of contributing to the project of installing classrooms for children with special needs organized by "Saulutė" with a larger donation come about?
I had a goal, I wanted to financially contribute to the projects organized by "Saulutė". I am a volunteer at "Saulutė", I see how the organization carries out its activities responsibly. One of the main reasons why I support this organization is its honesty, responsibility and accountability towards each donor and its very serious and responsible selection of the educational institution it supports. I also really liked the fact that "Saulutė" carries out projects in small towns, remote from big cities, which receive the least attention and assistance.

Why did you choose to support the Antanas Jaroševičius Gymnasium in the Molėtai district, Giedraičiai?
My parents were born in the Molėtai region. My father, Mykolas Vaitėnas, lived in Ažubuoliai, and my mother, Alberta Masevičiūtė, lived in Inturkės Dūdanosiai. 13 years ago, the Molėtai region society organized a memorial service for my father. I saw how important he was to this region, so I wanted to make a meaningful contribution to this place while honoring my parents' name. This influenced my decision to support a school in that region.

How did the search for an educational institution go? Artūras Žilys maintains contacts with representatives of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, specifically Dalia Asanavičiūtė, the representative of Lithuanians worldwide in the Seimas. Dalia called the mayor of Molėtai, the mayor consulted with the schools. We found A. Jaroševičius Gymnasium in Giedraičiai, which was in dire need of classes adapted for children with special educational needs (SEP). A Zoom meeting took place, during which we spoke with the principal of the gymnasium and the specialists working there. The school prepared a detailed proposal, the estimate of which at the time exceeded our set limit.

What decisions did you make in this situation?
Daina Siliūnas and Artūras Žilis advised the gymnasium director and teachers working with children with SEN to consult with other schools where “Saulutė” has already set up specialized classes. The school representatives did their homework very responsibly – they visited the proposed schools, saw the already set up classes, consulted with the specialists working there and heard what tools or equipment were useful and what was worth giving up. Such consultations helped the gymnasium adjust the plan. Daina and Artūras also proposed to include the Molėtai community in the classroom set up project, which, after the gymnasium’s invitation, gladly joined in financing the set up of special classes. In the end, as many as four classes were set up – a speech therapist’s, a psychologist’s and two special educators’ classes.

Your generous donation financed the majority of the project costs, right?
I am glad that I was able to contribute to this project. However, I want to emphasize that it was joint financing. During the accordion concert, which took place on January 26 of this year, the donations collected contributed to the implementation of this project. The Molėtai municipality also contributed to the equipment of the classrooms. Ironically, I thought that I would just write a check and that would be the end of my mission, but I was given every opportunity to get involved in the whole process and, to be honest, I learned a lot myself: I found out what tools and methodologies are used to educate special needs children, how the educational process works, etc.

Did the school keep in touch with you throughout the project? Yes, during the installation of the classrooms, we constantly received reports on what had been done. And at the end of May we received a notification that everything was already installed and we were invited to the opening.

Did you also participate in the opening of the classes this time? It was a great honor for me to participate in the opening event of the equipped classes on May 31. Also present were Member of the Seimas Dalia Asanavičiūtė, Mayor of Molėtai, Head of the Culture and Education Department, Elder of Molėtai District, members of the gymnasium community, as well as my relatives. During the event, while communicating with the gymnasium director and special educators, we clearly understood that the installation of such classes is a significant support for special needs children studying at the gymnasium. It turns out that as many as 37 percent of children attending Antanas Jaroševičius Gymnasium have special needs. The specialists told us how they work with children, and we learned how many inventions have been made to make it easier for children to engage in learning. The teachers showed what methods they use with children, how they calm children, relax their emotions with tools, games, etc.

I am glad that during the opening of the classes, I was able to present a symbolic "Saulutė" plaque, which contains a dedication, noting that the project was implemented in honor of my parents of bright memory. During the event, I wanted to tell a little about my parents, I brought a photo of our family, taken after the February 16 commemoration, where my mother is wearing national clothes, my brother is in a scout uniform. The gymnasium administration framed the photo and hung it on the org. "Saulutė" gratitude plaque.

Raminta, tell us about your parents.
Both my parents were born in Lithuania. My father studied medicine earning a doctorate degree and he was a professor, while my mother was a nurse. When my father was studying medicine in Moscow, he realized that Russia would reoccupy Lithuania. He decided to flee and returned home on foot. He knew that he would be deported, so in 1944 he fled to Germany and spent 5 years in camps. He came to America in 1949. He lived in Buffalo, NY for a while, then moved to Cleveland. My parents passed their professional exams, bought a two-story house, where they set up a clinic on the ground floor, and we lived on the second floor. The house was in an area with many emigrants. Speaking Lithuanian, Russian, and Polish, they soon had many clients. My father was involved in Lithuanian activities, was the chairman of the board of a Lithuanian school, and helped found the Ohio Lithuanian Medical Association. My mother worked with him, and together they were good partners. My mother's motto was - "whatever you do, do it well." She lived by that all her life and raised us that way.

My parents had great respect for education. Their parents had to make a lot of sacrifices to send their children to school. My father always said that he never expected to be able to achieve such a high academic degree. Both of them understood that education opens up opportunities, so after receiving an education themselves, they really wanted to help others. Therefore, I am very happy that my donation will improve the education of children. Not for one child, but for many. And for many years. This is the best investment. Without the "Saulutė" organization, I would never have been able to do this.

Aukojimas ir geri darbai atneša į mūsų gyvenimus džiaugsmo ir pilnatvės bei suteikia prasmės kasdienybei. Raminta Vaitėnaitė Jacobs, dosniai prisidėjusi prie labdaros organizacijos „Saulutė“ (Sunlight Children’s Aid) projekto, įrengiant klasę specialių poreikių vaikams, pagerbė visą gyvenimą mokslą vertinusių tėvelių atminimą.

Raminta, kaip gimė mintis stambesne auka prisidėti prie „Saulutės“ organizuojamo klasių, skirtų specialių poreikių vaikams, įrengimo projekto? Turėjau tikslą, norėjau finansiškai prisidėti prie „Saulutės“ rengiamų projektų. Esu „Saulutės“ savanorė, matau, kaip organizacijoje atsakingai vykdoma veikla. Vienas iš pagrindinių motyvų, kodėl remiu šią organizaciją, yra jos sąžiningumas, atsakomybė ir atskaitomybė prieš kiekvieną aukotoją bei labai rimtas ir atsakingas remiamos ugdymo įstaigos parinkimas. Labai patiko ir tai, kad „Saulutė“ projektus atlieka mažuose, nuo didmiesčių nutolusiuose miesteliuose, kurie mažiausiai sulaukia dėmesio ir pagalbos.

Kodėl pasirinkote paremti būtent Molėtų rajone, Giedraičiuose esančią Antano Jaroševičiaus gimnaziją?
Mano tėveliai gimę Molėtų krašte. Tėvelis, Mykolas Vaitėnas, gyveno Ažubuoliuose, o mama, Alberta Masevičiūtė – Inturkės Dūdanosiuose. Prieš 13 metų Molėtų krašto draugija surengė mano tėvelio paminėjimą. Mačiau, koks jis yra svarbus šiam kraštui, todėl norėjosi prasmingai prisidėti prie šios vietos tuo pačiu pagerbiant tėvelių vardą. Tai padarė įtaką mano sprendimui paremti to regiono mokyklą.

Kaip vyko mokymosi įstaigos paieška? Artūras Žilys palaiko ryšius su Lietuvos Respublikos Seimo atstovais, konkrečiai – Dalia Asanavičiūte, pasaulio lietuvių atstove Seime. Dalia paskambino Molėtų merui, meras pasitarė su mokyklomis. Radome A. Jaroševičiaus gimnaziją Giedraičiuose, kuriai labai trūko specialaus ugdymo poreikių (SUP) vaikams pritaikytų klasių. Įvyko Zoom susitikimas, kurio metu kalbėjomės su gimnazijos direktore, čia dirbančiais specialistais. Gimnazija paruošė detalų pasiūlymą, kurio sąmata tuo metu viršijo mūsų nustatytą limitą.

Kokių sprendimų ėmėtės šioje situacijoje? Daina Siliūnas su Artūru Žiliu gimnazijos direktorei bei mokytojoms, dirbančioms su SUP vaikais, patarė pasikonsultuoti su kitomis mokyklomis, kuriose „Saulutė“ jau įrengė specializuotas klases. Mokyklos atstovai labai atsakingai atliko namų darbus – apsilankė pasiūlytose mokyklose, gyvai pamatė jau įrengtas klases, pasikonsultavo su jose dirbančiais specialistais ir išgirdo, kokios priemonės ar įrengimai yra naudingi, o ko verta atsisakyti. Tokios konsultacijos padėjo gimnazijai pakoreguoti planą. Taip pat Daina su Artūru pasiūlė į klasės įrengimo projektą įtraukti Molėtų bendruomenę, kuri po gimnazijos pakvietimo, mielai prisijungė prie specialių klasių įrengimo finansavimo. Finale buvo įrengtos net keturios klasės – logopedės, psichologo ir dvi specialiųjų pedagogų klasės.

Jūsų dosni auka finansavo didžiausią dalį projekto išlaidų, tiesa? Džiaugiuosi, kad galėjau prisidėti prie šio projekto. Tačiau noriu pabrėžti, kad tai buvo jungtinis finansavimas. Akordeonų koncerto metu, kuris įvyko šių metų sausio 26 d., surinktos aukos prisidėjo prie šio projekto įgyvendinimo. Taip pat Molėtų savivaldybė prisidėjo prie klasių įrengimo. Likimo ironija, aš galvojau, kad tik išrašysiu čekį ir tuo mano misija užsibaigs, tačiau man buvo sudarytos visos galimybės įsitraukti į visą procesą ir, tiesą pasakius, pati labai daug ko išmokau: sužinojau, kokios priemonės ir metodikos naudojamos ugdant SUP vaikus, kaip vyksta ugdymo procesas ir t. t.

Viso projekto metu gimnazija palaikė ryšį su jumis? Taip, klasių įrengimo metu, mes nuolatos gaudavome ataskaitą, kas jau atlikta. O gegužės mėnesio pabaigoje gavome pranešimą, kad jau viskas įrengta ir esame kviečiami į atidarymą.

Šį kartą klasių atidaryme dalyvavote ir jūs? Man buvo didelė garbė dalyvauti įrengtų klasių atidarymo renginyje gegužės 31 d. Taip pat atvyko Seimo narė Dalia Asanavičiūtė, Molėtų meras, Kultūros ir švietimo skyriaus vedėja, Molėtų rajono seniūnas, gimnazijos bendruomenės nariai, taip pat mano giminės. Renginio metu, bendraudami su gimnazijos direktore ir specialiaisiais pedagogais, aiškiai supratome, kad tokių klasių įrengimas – ženkli paspirtis gimnazijoje besimokantiems SUP vaikams. Pasirodo, net 37 proc. Antano Jaroševičiaus gimnaziją lankančių vaikų turi specialius poreikius. Specialistai papasakojo, kaip dirba su vaikais, sužinojome, kiek daug išradimų yra padaryta, kad vaikai galėtų lengviau įsitraukti į mokymąsi. Mokytojos parodė, kokius metodus naudoja vaikams, kaip nuramina vaikus, atpalaiduoja jų emocijas su tam padedančiomis priemonėmis, žaidimais ir t.t.

Džiaugiuosi, kad klasių atidarymo metu, galėjau įteikti simbolinę „Saulutės“ lentelę, kurioje įrašyta dedikacija, pažyminti, kad projektas įgyvendintas pagerbiant mano šviesaus atminimo tėvelius. Renginio metu norėjau kiek papasakoti apie savo tėvelius, atsivežiau mūsų šeimos nuotrauką, padarytą po Vasario 16-osios minėjimo, kur mano mama vilki tautinius drabužius, brolis – su skauto uniforma. Gimnazijos administracija nuotrauką įrėmino ir pakabino prie org. „Saulutės“ padėkos lentelės.

Raminta, papasakokite apie savo tėvelius. Abu tėvai gimė Lietuvoje. Mano tėvelis išsimokslino iki medicinos mokslo daktaro laipsnio, buvo profesorius, o mama buvo slaugytoja. Kai tėvelis gilino žinias Maskvoje, suprato, kad Rusija vėl užims Lietuvą. Apsisprendė bėgti, pėsčias grįžo namo. Žinojo, kad bus ištremtas, todėl 1944 metais pasitraukė į Vokietiją ir 5-erius metus išgyveno stovyklose. 1949 m. atvyko į Ameriką. Kurį laiką gyveno Buffalo NY, vėliau persikėlė gyventi į Clevelandą. Tėveliai išlaikė profesinius egzaminus, nusipirko dviejų aukštų namą, kur pirmame aukšte įkūrė kliniką, o antrame aukšte gyvenome mes. Namas buvo rajone, kuriame buvo daug emigrantų. Patys mokėdami lietuviškai, rusiškai, lenkiškai netrukus turėjo daug klientų. Tėvelis dalyvavo lietuviškoje veikloje, buvo lituanistinės mokyklos valdybos pirmininkas, padėjo įkurti Ohio lietuvių gydytojų sąjungą. Mama dirbo kartu su juo, abu kartu jie buvo geri partneriai. Mano mamos šūkis buvo – „ką darai, daryk gerai“. Ji visą gyvenimą tuo vadovavosi ir mus taip išauklėjo.

Mano tėveliai labai gerbė mokslą. Jų tėvai turėjo daug pasiaukoti, kad galėtų išsiųsti vaikus mokytis. Tėvelis visada pasakojo nesitikėjęs, kad galės pasiekti tokį aukštą mokslo laipsnį. Abu suprato, kad mokslas atveria galimybes, tad patys gavę išsilavinimą, labai norėjo padėti kitiems. Todėl labai džiaugiuosi, kad mano auka pagerins mokymąsi vaikams. Ne vienam vaikui, o daugeliui. Ir ne vienerius metus. Tai pati geriausia investicija. Be „Saulutės“ organizacijos niekada nebūčiau to galėjusi padaryti.
